Why is The Food Allergy ToolKit for Parents the tool for you?

You’ll get the help you’ve been searching for

from a pediatrician who lives with food allergies herself.

Ashley O'Shields, M.D., is a pediatrician with 20 years of experience diagnosing and treating infants and children. Over the last 20 years she has diagnosed hundreds of children with food allergies.

But diagnosis is just the first step. She has also taught families how to recognize when their child is having an allergic reaction and the critical steps to take when a reaction occurs.

Most importantly, she helps families navigate life understanding how to avoid the allergenic foods.

Not only is she a pediatrician, but Dr. O'Shields herself has lived with food allergies for over 40 years, since the age of 5 years old.

She understands what it feels like as a child navigating school class parties, outings with friends, or attending family gatherings while unable to safely eat the foods everyone else is eating.

As a pediatrician, Dr. O'Shields has seen the bewilderment and frustration of parents who are learning how to live with their child's food allergies.

She is able to offer parents solutions not only as a pediatrician, but as one who has experienced childhood with food allergies because she watched her own mother creatively work around social situations like school parties, outings with friends, and attending family gatherings so there would not be embarrassment or a feeling of being different. Because of how her mother handled these situations, she never felt isolated or less than others.

And now, she teaches parents how to do just that for their own children.

Dr. O’Shields loves to share her knowledge with families who are learning about food allergies. It is so important to her to be able to alleviate the fear and frustrations that families have when a child is diagnosed with food allergies and to give detailed information about how to move forward. She also enjoys helping children and teenagers learn how to navigate the world with these new allergies, which can be very frightening and frustrating for them.

When children learn that even the doctor has food allergies, it becomes less scary and more normal.
